We just had this huge 4th of July celebration, as a country. Nearly everyone I know was more then happy to celebrate our country and our freedoms. However, I guess sometimes people want freedom for themselves and no one else. Though this document holds not legal power I think its very important we remember certain phrases from the Declaration of Independence...
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed...
Can we take a short look at the preamble to the constitution...
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Here is my point, we struggled so hard and so long for religious freedoms, to make our government work for the welfare of the people. Tell me how doing this up holds those struggles. Perhaps the biggest argument I have heard regarding gay marriage is that it would create the opportunity for more "un ethical" acts to be legalized. We have faced so much as a nation, to deny a group of citizens certain rights that are available to the majority doesn't contend well with our past. What ever your opinion let me know.
